Lab Grown Diamonds

Lab grown diamonds are chemically the same as natural diamonds but are a cost-effective alternative.

What Are Lab Grown Diamonds?

Lab grown diamonds are produced in laboratories using processes that mimic how natural diamonds are created in the depths of the Earth over millions of years. Utilising advanced technology, these diamonds are manufactured from carbon atoms arranged in a unique crystal structure, embodying the same optical and chemical properties as their natural counterparts.

Lab grown diamonds have seen substantial improvements in quality and cost-effectiveness over the past decade, enabling their application in industrial use as well as in jewellery. They are an affordable, high-quality alternative to earth-mined diamonds.

Why Choose A Lab Grown Diamond?

How Are Lab Grown Diamonds Made?

The creation of lab grown diamonds begins with a minuscule seed of pre-existing diamond, which undergoes a procedure of extreme pressure and heat that imitates nature's diamond-forming process, using either the Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) or the High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) method.

In the CVD process, the seed diamond is placed in a plasma reactor chamber where carbon-rich gases are added at low pressure. Microwaves heat these gases to generate plasma, breaking apart the gas molecules and allowing carbon atoms to bond to the seed, layer by layer.

Alternatively, the HPHT method creates diamonds by placing the seed in a giant mechanical press alongside a carbon starting material. The carbon separates under high pressure and temperature, attaching to the cooler diamond seed and forming new diamond layers.

These processes could take several weeks or months, with the exact duration depending on the diamond's size, colour, and additional characteristics.

What Is the Difference Between Lab Grown Diamonds and Natural Diamonds?

Lab grown diamonds share identical physical, chemical, and optical characteristics as natural diamonds, so they display the same captivating fire, scintillation, and sparkle. Formed from pure carbon, both types have the same crystalline structure, making them almost impossible to distinguish to the untrained eye. Yet, due to their distinct creation process, their trace elements and inclusions might vary under magnification. What really separates them is their rarity; natural diamonds, formed over thousands of years deep in the Earth, are finite in number, whereas lab grown diamonds can be infinitely produced. All lab grown diamonds should come with certification indicating their laboratory origin.

Regardless of their genesis, both lab grown and natural diamonds offer the same visual beauty.

Lab Grown Diamond Ring Settings

To enhance the DX mining-free offering, our engagement ring settings are crafted with lab grown accent diamonds when set with a lab grown centre diamond. If you select a lab grown centre diamond, the accent diamonds on your setting will be of the same origin.

What Is the Difference Between Lab Grown Diamonds and Diamond Simulants?

The critical distinction between lab grown diamonds and diamond simulants is their composition and physical properties. Diamond simulants, like cubic zirconia and moissanite, may visually resemble diamonds, but they are not actual carbon crystals. Unlike lab grown diamonds, which are chemically identical to natural diamonds, simulants lack the same physical and chemical properties and, as a result, are sold at significantly lower prices.

The durability of simulants is also inferior, leading to increased susceptibility to wear and diminished sparkle over time. These simulants can be differentiated from natural or lab created diamonds by their refractive properties and thermal conductivity, which can often be determined with the naked eye or a handheld diamond tester. Consequently, while they offer an aesthetic appeal, simulants lack the enduring beauty of lab grown diamonds.

How Are Lab Grown Diamonds Graded and Certified?

Like their naturally mined counterparts, lab grown diamonds undergo an impartial grading process by an independent gem laboratory. This grading focuses on the four critical characteristics: cut, clarity, carat, and colour. Each diamond's brilliance is determined by its cut, arguably the most influential factor. Clarity refers to a diamond's transparency and absence of flaws, while colour grading assesses a diamond's colourlessness. Carat relates to the diamond's weight and size. Each lab grown diamond is meticulously scrutinised, receiving a quality rating that mirrors the stringent process applied to natural diamonds.

All DX lab grown diamonds over 0.30ct are accompanied by independent certification.

Are Lab Grown Diamonds Priced Differently to Natural Diamonds?

Lab grown diamonds disrupt traditional diamond pricing dynamics, offering a uniform price per carat weight, in contrast to natural diamonds, which are priced according to their unique attributes as well as their scarcity. Thanks to the limitless production potential of lab grown diamonds, they are more affordable than their natural counterparts.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Yes, DX offers a wide selection of loose diamonds including both natural diamonds and lab grown diamonds.

  • Lab grown diamonds are just like natural diamonds in that they will vary in colour, clarity, and cut. At DX there are high quality options for both lab produced and earth-created diamonds.

  • Lab grown diamonds are evaluated according to the same characteristics as natural diamonds, using the 4Cs: cut, colour, clarity and carat. All DX lab grown diamonds over 0.30ct have been independently assessed and come with certification.

  • Lab grown diamonds offer substantial value, presenting quality and size at a more economical price than natural diamonds.

  • Yes, you can protect your lab grown diamonds by insuring them just as you can with natural diamonds.

  • Clients interested in a more cost-effective or mine-free solution may opt for lab grown diamonds due to their lower price. However, it should be noted that, like all gemstones, resale values can fluctuate, and as a newer offering, future pricing of lab diamonds is less certain compared to natural diamonds.

  • Lab grown diamonds can be produced using one of two different processes. They are manufactured through the Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) or High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) methods.

  • If you choose a lab grown diamond as the centre stone for your engagement ring, the accent diamonds in the setting will also be lab grown.
